Census Data Reveals New York to Lose 2022 Congress Seat

Census Data Reveals New York to Lose 2022 Congress Seat The newly released numbers from the 2020 U.S. Census count showed the state will lose one of its seats in the House of Representatives in 2022. The seat was lost by a count of just 89 people. April 27, 2021 •  (TNS) New York will lose a seat in Congress and an Electoral College vote based on new population data, the U.S. Census Bureau said Monday in its first announcement of 2020 census results. U.S. Census officials said Monday if New York counted 89 more people and the population data for all other states held steady the state would not be losing a seat.

NY To Lose 1 Seat In Congress After New Census

1:48 By the slimmest of margins, just 89 fewer people, New York will slip from 27 to 26 congressional districts after next year’s elections, now that the 2020 census figures show the state’s population is not growing as fast as most other states. The data released Monday showed New York had a total of 20,215,751 residents in 2020, up from 2010, but most other states grew faster. The slower population gains in the upstate regions west of Albany will likely result in one fewer seat there. Democrats control the governor’s seat and hold a supermajority in both houses of the State Legislature. They appoint the members of the state’s redistricting commission, which draws the new lines.
