A number of the 25,000 troops standing guard around the US Capitol in recent days in the wake of the January 6 insurrection had been allowed to take breaks and naps in between long shifts on the floors of the building housing the US Congress. But on January 21, 2021, afternoon, after the legislature resumed work a day after the Biden inauguration, someone decided instead to force them out to a nearby parking garage.Brendan Smialowski/AFP via Getty ImagesShow MoreShow Less

Red State governors Greg Abbot of Texas and Ron DeSantis of Florida are saying enough they want their Guard home.
Abbott said he had instructed the head of the Texas National Guard to order them home.
PORTSMOUTH The Air Guard at Pease ferried troops and gear from New Hampshire and other states to the nation’s capital as part of the effort to buttress security for Wednesday’s inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.
According to a Facebook post Saturday from the 157th Air Refueling Wing, which is based at the Portsmouth International Airport at Pease, KC-46A tankers were used to carry members of the National Guard and their equipment from New Hampshire and at least two other states.
Troops were flown into Joint Base Andrews in Maryland for deployment in Washington, D.C., to help secure the Capitol building and surrounding area for the inauguration and prevent a repeat of the violence there Jan. 6 when Congress met to certify Biden’s win over Donald Trump.
