Fifty-three years ago, something happened at the Kentucky Derby that had never happened before. The winning thoroughbred, Dancer’s Image, who was owned by New England businessman Peter Fuller, had rallied from last place to win. “Dancer was last, and my brother turned and looked at me, as much as to say, ‘What are we all doing down here?’” Fuller told New Hampshire Chronicle in an interview at his North Hampton farm in 2008. “I said, ‘Don’t worry. We’re just starting. ”But shortly thereafter, the racehorse became the first winner to be disqualified in Derby history. Second-place finisher Forward Pass was later declared the winner.Phenylbutazone, also known as bute, was found in Dancer’s Image’s system after the 1968 Derby, leading officials to strip the horse of the win.Dancer’s Image was given a trainer-approved dose of the drug six days before the race, which was seemingly enough time for it to clear the horse’s system, according to the Associated
