Thomas McKenna, 60, is a former treasurer of the Crossmaglen Rangers GAA club in County Armagh. He faces 173 charges, including raping three males, sexual activity with a child and 64 charges of sexual assault. Mr McKenna, whose address was given as c/o Maghaberry Prison, was remanded back into custody by a judge in Newry. The judge told the defendant she was satisfied there was a prima facie case to answer when he appeared before Newry Magistrates Court via videolink on Wednesday.

Charges over £3 million worth of illicit cigarettes

A MAN has appeared in court accused of being involved in smuggling £3 million worth of illicit cigarettes. Daniel Thomas Ruddy faces three charges under the Customs and Excise Act following an HMRC seizure last May. He is further accused of converting criminal property, namely money, on dates between May 27 and 30 last year. A prosecution lawyer told Belfast magistrates court on Saturday the 35-year-old was resident in the Republic of Ireland and that his proposed bail address in Carlingford was outside the jurisdiction. Ruddy’s lawyer said that co-accused in the case had been allowed to sign bail at police stations in Northern Ireland while living in the Republic.

Teen fined for repeatedly singing Fields of Athenry at cops and told to learn all the words

A judge has told a Newry teenager he hopes his time in a young offenders centre will inspire him to learn the words to the Fields of Athenry. Newry Magistrate’s Court heard how Thomas Martin (19), who appeared today via video link, repeatedly sang the traditional Irish ballad to police officers after he was arrested for resisting and obstructing police on June 5 last year. Martin later pleaded guilty to both charges. With an address at Parkhead Crescent in the city, it was heard how Martin had been mixing with a number of older males who had been drinking in public on that date.

Gangster complains about being kept in Covid-19 isolation in jail

An infamous gangster facing charges of conspiracy to murder has complained about the effects on his mental health of Covid-19 isolation in prison. Michael O Loughlin said that he has to go into isolation in prison after interviews with police who are investigating a slew of criminal charges against him. The Galway man told a court hearing in Newry this week: My mental health suffers very badly in isolation. I ve been in there twice already. O Loughlin is facing a litany of charges in the North after the UK s National Crime Agency used information from the hacked Encrochat network used by criminals to encrypt messages.
