(NEW YORK) The COVID-19 pandemic is not over yet and hospitals are seeing a startling uptick in younger patients filling hospitals.
States including Florida, Washington, Michigan, Colorado and Pennsylvania are reeling from a rise in virus cases and hospitalizations among younger people.
Experts say group activities, vaccine hesitancy, virus variants, return to work and pandemic fatigue are to blame.
Dr. Rupali Limaye, an associate scientist in International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, told ABC News that younger people last to get the vaccine are more susceptible to getting sick, especially with more contagious variants.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Broward Health Medical Center’s chief medical officer says the hospital has seen “a slow wave” of patients needing to be admitted recently with COVID-19 and Joshua Lenchus also says they are treating younger patients with the virus.
“Usually between the age of 25 and 44 is the age that we are seeing, and when you compare that to the statistics of the increases in incidents in the community, that’s the age that is most susceptible,” he said.
Memorial Healthcare System says it is also seeing an uptick in COVID-19 hospitalizations.

LAUDERHILL, Fla. – Three people hospitalized with gunshot wounds after a shooting on State Road 7 southbound in Lauderhill are in stable condition and expected to be released Monday evening.
A tan vehicle remained in the road riddled with bullets, just north of Sunrise Boulevard. Authorities say they began receiving 911 calls shortly after 3 p.m. Monday and that someone in a black BMW fired at that tan car, which then crashed into other vehicles while trying to get away.
After the crash, more gunfire erupted. Investigators say there was an exchange of gunfire between the cars involved. It’s unclear if anyone in the BMW was shot. They called all the area hospitals and didn’t get any additional victims.

When the coronavirus started sweeping through South Florida in March of 2020 it hit Michael Valdez especially hard.
“I went into the hospital with COVID without a condition of any kind, no medications, and I woke up after being in a coma and it’s all gone,” Valdez said.
