A knife-wielding man was fatally shot by a Broward Sheriff s Office deputy at a North Lauderdale shopping center Thursday night, a spokeswoman for the agency said.
Deputies received a call about 9:15 p.m. about a man who was cutting himself and waving the knife around inside of a Ross Dress for Less store on West McNab Road, BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said.
When the first deputy arrived, he encountered the 26-year-old suspect outside the store.
The suspect was making threats to harm himself and harm the deputy, Coleman-Wright said.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Reports of weight gain during the coronavirus pandemic are leading to a rise in complaints of arthritis-related joint pain.
“A lot of people I’m seeing may have been asymptomatic and a little bit of weight gain, it doesn’t take much, just five, 10 pounds, and they will have a significant amount of pain in their hips and knees,” said Dr. Jason Walters, an orthopedic surgeon with Broward Health Medical Center.
Walters said once arthritis sets in, it cannot be reversed, but losing weight can still help ease some of the symptoms.

WILTON MANORS, Fla. – Amid the expansion of COVID-19 vaccinations to teenagers this week, researchers are already exploring the potential use and benefits to children of all ages.
“The Pfizer and Moderna trials are already looking at kids down to 12 years old and some of that preliminary data already shows some efficacy, some effectiveness and the drug companies are already pushing the needle all the way down to as low as six months,” said Dr. Joshua Lenchus, Chief Medical Officer of Broward Health Medical Center.
Lenchus said time will tell if vaccinating children will allow schools to fully reopen.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A father of four died a year ago on Thursday in Broward County and detectives had yet to find the gunmen who fled in a silver Toyota Tacoma.
Caleb Fields, 40, was shot in the 800 block of Northwest 22nd Road in Fort Lauderdale. He died at the Broward Health Medical Center.
