DURHAM, N.C., Feb. 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/ The E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation has announced the election of four new members to its Board of Directors including; Caryl Hart, PhD, Dawn Wright, PhD, Keith Tuffley, and Stephen H. Lockhart, MD, PhD. The new Board of Directors appointments took place between February last year and January this year.
Caryl Hart - Caryl is Commissioner, California Coastal Commission appointed by Speaker Anthony Rendon in 2019, and currently serves as Interim General Manager of the Sonoma County Agricultural and Open Space District. Caryl is an attorney with more than 25 years of advocacy, parks acquisition and management, scholarship and administrative experience. She served for 13 years as a member of the California State Parks Commission, including seven years as Chair. UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. Just under half of the workforce in the United States are women yet they hold only 26% of the jobs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Underrepresentation is even more pronounced in Black or African Americans, and Hispanic or Latinx who comprise only 7% and 9% of the STEM jobs, respectively.
Dr. David Hyndman, an expert in hydrogeology with 25 years of experience as a researcher, educator and academic administrator, joined UT Dallas on Feb. 1 as the new dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
Clarence Allen, 1925–2021 March 23, 2021
Clarence Allen (MS 51, PhD 54), professor of geology and geophysics, emeritus, and a prominent seismologist, passed away on January 21, 2021. He was 96 years old.
Allen was born on February 15, 1925, in Palo Alto, California. His father, an educator, began his career teaching blacksmithing and eventually became a professor at the Claremont Colleges; while his mother died during the birth of his sister when he was in sixth grade. He developed an early love of geography, cartography, and the outdoors while on family road trips throughout the American West, interests that left him well suited for his role as a navigator in B-29s when he served in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific during World War II. He began his higher education at Reed College in 1942, but left to spend three years in the service from 1943 to 1946, and then returned to graduate with a bachelor s degree in physics in 1949.
