Proposal goes before city council to rezone the area between Third and Fifth Streets east of U.S. 52 Walt Unks
A unanimous rezoning vote on the Winston-Salem City Council Monday night cleared the way for a major redevelopment project in East Winston that is expected to bring 325 new housing units east of U.S. 52 near the downtown Innovation Quarter.
Apartments, townhouses and retail and office development are now approved for a seven-acre site just east of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church and stretching from Third to Fifth Street.
Mayor Allen Joines is calling the project one that can achieve a long-stated goal of city leaders to extend the benefits of the Innovation Quarter to a nearby majority-Black neighborhood thatâs also in need of more decent yet affordable housing.

From the air â specifically a drone zipping overhead at 100-plus feet â itâs easy to see why hikers, bird watchers and dog walkers like Long Creek Park just the way it is.
Most of the 164-acre spot, purchased by the city in 2017, looks and feels like the golf course it once was.
It is lined by tall, mature trees and rolls gently along with the natural elevation of the land. City workers keep its (former) fairways mowed to reasonable lengths without dumping a boatload of chemical herbicides to leech into Muddy Creek. Paved paths, once used by electric golf carts, make for smooth, at-your-own pace walking.

I am not a camper.
Anytime that I have ever camped, I have wondered why on earth I had chosen to sleep on the ground when I had access to a perfectly good bed.
I know that camping is the cheapest option for an overnight stay. And I know that some folks thrive on the rough and tumble camping experience that most of our state parks offer.
Nothing wrong with that, but some of us require more amenities, especially at bedtime.
Donât get me wrong: I love being outdoors, I could hike all day, and I love spending time on (or in) a lake. It is just that after a busy nature-filled day, a hot shower and a nice clean bedroom with heat and air and a comfy bed are what I crave.
