El Paso Congresswoman Escobar Criticizes Governor Abbott s Abortion Ban

May 20, 2021 El Paso Congresswoman Veronica Escobar has blasted Governor Greg Abbott s new ban on abortions, calling it a brazen attack against women s freedom to make decisions about their bodies. Governor Abbott signed the ban, considered one of the nation s most restrictive policies, into law yesterday morning. The ban makes it illegal to perform an abortion after a heartbeat is detected, which can be about six weeks into a pregnancy and often before a woman knows she s pregnant. There are no exceptions in cases of rape or incest. Congresswoman Escobar says she and her colleagues are going to reintroduce the Women s Health Protection Act to help protect access to abortion.

Abortion rights advocates up their lobbying with Roe under threat

(SAUL LOEB/AFP via Getty Images) The Supreme Court announced on Monday it will hear an abortion case that could dismantle abortion protections and work against increased lobbying efforts made by pro-abortion rights groups to codify language laid out in Roe v. Wade.  Lobbying spending by pro-abortion rights groups spiked by 107 percent in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period last year. Planned Parenthood, a nonprofit providing and lobbying for reproductive health care, spent roughly $854,000 last year and are set to outpace that spending, already having spent around $242,000 in the first quarter of 2021. The second major lobbying spender was the Center for Reproductive Rights, who have already spent roughly $150,000 this quarter.

Abortion Is on SCOTUS Radar—and Biden Is Getting Heat

On Monday, the Supreme Court announced it would take on a Mississippi case that has the potential to overturn Roe v Wade, the 1973 decision making abortion legal across the country. If that happens, nearly half of the U.S. would move to prohibit the procedure, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights.
