Continued rise in COVID-19 hospitalizations spurs concern in Lancaster County

COVID-19 hospitalizations are continuing to increase in Lancaster County and statewide, even as vaccinations accelerate and the pool of vulnerable people shrinks. The county hit a 2021 high of 75 patients on Wednesday, which is three times the 25 patients hospitalized at the new year’s low point a month ago, on March 6, according to the state Department of Health. Over the past seven days, the county has averaged 64 COVID-19 patients in its hospitals. That’s up from 47 in the prior week and 34 two weeks ago. In fact, the number of COVID-19 patients in local hospitals on Wednesday was higher than during the pandemic’s initial surge last spring, though it remains well below December’s peak of 178.

THE ISSUE Gov. Tom Wolf reported Friday that Pennsylvania ranked 13th in the nation in first doses of COVID-19 vaccines administered; 32.4% of Pennsylvanians had received at least one dose; 1.92 million Pennsylvanians were fully vaccinated; more than 5.4 million vaccines had been administered; and more than 1.6 million seniors had received at least one dose. In the battle to defeat COVID-19, we are making real progress via vaccination. The nation had, by Thursday, “administered 20 million shots in seven days,” President Joe Biden said Friday. And Pennsylvania is climbing the state rankings for vaccines administered, which is both amazing and surprising, given the commonwealth’s slow and rocky start in the race to vaccinate.
