Biden win ratified after Capitol riot
TAKING A STAND: Despite Donald Trump’s hectoring on social media, US Vice President Mike Pence said he could not claim ‘unilateral authority’ to reject the electoral votes
AP, WASHINGTON
US Congress early yesterday confirmed former US vice president Joe Biden as the winner of November last year’s presidential election after a violent mob loyal to US President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol in a stunning attempt to overturn the election, undercut the nation’s democracy and keep Trump in the White House.
US lawmakers were resolved to complete the Electoral College tally in a display to the nation, and the world, of their enduring commitment to uphold the will of the voters and the peaceful transfer of power.

The storming of the Capitol by a mob on Wednesday as the United States Congress convened to certify President-elect Joe Biden s victory drew heavy criticism and ultimately led to several legislators to not challenge the victory.
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) addressed senators as the Senate reconvened saying the Senate would not be intimidated.
âWe are back at our posts. We will discharge our duty under the Constitution for our nation. And we are going to do it tonight, McConnell said. âThis afternoon, Congress began the process of honoring the will of the American people and counting the Electoral College votes. We have fulfilled this solemn duty every four years for more than two centuries. Whether our nation has been at war or at peace

WASHINGTON President-elect Joe Biden will introduce Merrick Garland as his pick for attorney general on Thursday along with three others he has selected for senior Justice Department positions to restore the independence of the agency and faith in the rule of law.
In picking Garland, a federal appeal judge, is turning to an experienced judge who held senior positions at the Justice Department decades ago, including as a supervisor of the prosecution of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.
Garland s nomination will force Senate Republicans to contend with someone they spurned four years ago refusing even to hold hearings when President Barack Obama nominated Garland for the Supreme Court. Biden is banking on Garland s credentials and reputation for moderation to ensure his confirmation.
