New Mexico oil, gas industry opposes plan to store spent nuclear waste

It s the latest flashpoint in a decades-long battle to find a home for the nation s nuclear waste and it s being waged by unlikely allies and competing interests in the hamlets north of New York City in the shadow of Indian Point s nuclear reactors and in the oil and gas fields of New Mexico. In New Mexico, anti-nuclear groups and environmentalists have joined with the oil and gas industry in the Permian Basin to prevent Holtec from building an interim site midway between Carlsbad and Hobbs to store the nation s waste. And in New York, local officials eager to find new uses for the Indian Point site have squared off against environmental groups who think it might be safest to keep the spent fuel there.

New Mexico Legislative committee endorses boost to learning time

SANTA FE - The Legislative Education Study Committee has backed proposed legislation that would require public schools to increase the amount of time all students spend learning next school year. The idea is to address learning loss that has resulted from the pandemic. But, according to the proposal, the extra classroom time would be contingent on in-person instruction being allowed. A draft of the bill says elementary schools could extend schooling through the K-5 Plus program, which would add 25 days to the school year, or through the Extended Learning Time Program, which lengthens the year by 10 days. Middle and high schools would use the Extended Learning Time Program.

Oil, gas industry gifts billion to New Mexico schools despite COVID-19

Oil and gas contributed about $1.37 billion to public education in New Mexico, per a recent study from industry leaders for Fiscal Year 2020 – even as the state and world economy was ravaged by the COVID-19 heath crisis. In Fiscal Year 2019, oil and gas contributed about $1.36 billion to public education in a year of record-breaking production led by the Permian Basin and a boom in hydraulic fracturing. The pandemic brought on a slump in fuel demand which caused the value of oil to drop to historic lows, plummeting below $0 per barrel in April for the first time in history. But even during dire economic times, Ryan Flynn, director of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association, which commissioned the study with the New Mexico Tax Research Institute, said New Mexico still saw high levels of production which he expected to continue in the coming years as the world recovers from the health crisis.
