Mourners at Zamboanga monastery recall hope Aquino imparted

As the evening grew darker and the 10 pm Zamboanga curfew drew close, people rushed to the monastery along Roseller T. Lim Boulevard to offer individual prayers. The visitors recalled how Aquino had finalized his decision to run for president during a retreat inside this monastery in 2009.

Zamboanga, dubbed the City of Flowers, was true to its name that day. The flowers offered were mostly fresh chrysanthemums from the city s florists and cutflower farms. They were mostly yellow, the color associated with the Aquino family since the 80s.

From expressing their gratitude online to tying yellow ribbons around trees and lamp posts, Filipinos from different parts of the Philippines paid tribute to former president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III following his passing on Thursday, June 24.
Several institutions including the Philippine Educational Theater Association, Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), and Roxas City Heritage Zone lit up their buildings in yellow to pay homage to the departed president. The CCP explained that the color was a “symbol for freedom from dictatorship and reinstating democratic institutions.”
