Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) declared late Sunday that Maldives was on alert and working to enhance precautions, over the contagious new strain of the coronavirus detected in the United Kingdom last week.
Speaking at the virtually held biweekly press conference, HEOC spokesperson and Health Protection Agency (HPA) s Medical Officer Dr Nazla Rafeeq assured that authorities were closely monitoring the situation of the new COVID-19 strain. We re working on strengthening the implementation of existing measures, as well as enhancing their scope , she said.
US regulators have authorized a second coronavirus vaccine for emergency use.
This two-dose vaccine, developed by the biotech firm Moderna and the US National Institutes of Health, was about 94% effective at preventing COVID-19 in a large clinical trial.
Moderna s vaccine is easier to store and transport than Pfizer s COVID-19 shot, which got US clearance a week ago.
Moderna plans to deliver 20 million doses in the US by year s end.
