Home /Haliburton hospital ready for patient transfers from GTA COVID-1927 January 2021 By Mike Baker Following another weekend of almost 5,000 new cases of COVID-19 across Ontario and a further 102 deaths, health officials are preparing for the worst with many hospitals, particularly in the GTA, dangerously close to being overrun by this second wave of the pandemic. While we aren’t considered to be in a critical stage here in Haliburton County, staff from Haliburton Highlands Health Services [HHHS] have confirmed the local hospital is on stand-by and may be directed to accept patients from outside the community “at any time.” Carolyn Plummer, president and CEO of HHHS, informed the Times over the weekend that staff at the local hospital are prepared to step up if they are needed.

Staff and students return to in-person learning

COVID-1927 January 2021 By Sue Tiffin More than 100,000 students from across Ontario returned to in-person learning on Monday morning [Jan. 25], including those from Haliburton County’s five elementary schools and one high school. Trillium Lakelands District School Board announced last Wednesday [Jan. 20] that Haliburton’s Stuart Baker Elementary School, JD Hodgson Elementary School and Haliburton Highlands Secondary School, Minden’s Archie Stouffer Elementary School, Cardiff Elementary School and Wilberforce Elementary School would all re-open for in-class learning following an extended Christmas closure, brought on by the provincial lockdown enacted on Dec. 26 to stem the spread of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
