The danger zones

BBMP zones, total positivity rate in four sectors Mahadevapura, RR Nagar, East and Bommannahalli is close to the maximum limit Even as the last day of the extended lockdown is fast approaching, four of the eight zones under the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits remain under watch. They have been recording close to four per cent positivity rate, a key indicator of the active spread of the coronavirus in some areas. Experts state that it is practically impossible to enforce zone-wise restrictions but they suggest higher testing and aggressive containment measures as the ways to stop the spread of the infection.

As India s Covid pandemic surge eases, a race begins to prepare for a possible next wave

Key to the scramble is a renewed vaccination push and efforts to boost India s medical infrastructure to stockpile supplies, such as oxygen cylinders, and augment care networks from city slums to far-flung villages. India s vaccine makers, particularly the Serum Institute, are under pressure to enhance production to service the urgent domestic need even as the world waits for exports from the country to resume. India is reeling from a pandemic punch that brought staggering official daily death tolls of more than 4500 at its peak in mid-May. 20% of Maharashtra s 18+ population & 25% in Mumbai covered with at least one jab | Mumbai News

Representative image MUMBAI: In approximately six months since the Covid-19 vaccination drive started across India, 20.4% of the 18-plus population in Maharashtra has got at least one shot of the vaccine. Statistics show that 18,623,132 or 1.8 crore of Maharashtra s 91,435,000 population eligible for the vaccine have got at least one shot of the Covid-19 vaccine. The number is higher in Mumbai, where 28,13,035 have taken the first shot. “Mumbai has a population of 1.3 crore, so we believe over 25% of the eligible people have taken the vaccine,” said BMC additional commissioner Suresh Kakani. A mathematical analysis done by UK mathematician Murad Banaji a few weeks back showed that the number of Covid-19 deaths among the elderly 60-plus population in Mumbai had dropped (in comparison to the first wave) due to vaccination.
