Background COVID-19 was unknown prior to the outbreak in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The disease spread rapidly across the globe. On 30 January 2020, WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) and on 11 March characterized it as a pandemic. Globally, as of 15
th March 2021 there have been 119,603,761confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 2,649,722 deaths, reported to WHO. In the African region, there have been 2,953,556 confirmed cases.
Kenya’s index case was reported on 12th March 2020. As at 15
th March 2021, 113,967 cases and 1,918 deaths have been reported. This ranks Kenya as 7th on the case fatality rate in Africa. Kenya is currently witnessing a third wave of the pandemic.

Can Ebola be developed into a biological weapon? This question addresses the concerns of many following the most recent Ebola outbreaks in the past few years. The Ebola outbreak could quite possibly be the most deadly of this decade. It has affected many and still lives without a cure. The prospect of concentrating this into a biological weapon would be detrimental to the lives of many. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) informs Romanian citizens that the World Health Organization (WHO) - IHR (International Heath Regulation) Emergency Committee has decided to extend the measure of Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) following the recent assessment of the risk of the spread of wild-type or vaccine-derived poliovirus, agerpres.ro confirms.
Following the risk assessment, which takes into account the travel area, length of stay, activities and vaccination history, the list of countries for which polio vaccination is requested has been updated, as follows: Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Malaysia, Republic of the Philippines and the Republic of Yemen, shows an MAE release sent to AGERPRES.

A new study provides a heartbreaking reminder of the pain caused by the covid-19 pandemic. It estimates that nearly 40,000 children in the U.S. have lost at least one parent to the viral illness as of February this year. The study also found that more than 100,000 children would have lost a parent if the virus had been allowed to run its course unrestricted.

There have been previous attempts to tally up the grief caused by pandemic-related deaths in the U.S., now at over a half million. A recent poll this March, for instance, found that nearly one in five Americans knew someone personally who had died from covid-19. But this study, published in JAMA Pediatrics, seems to be the first to focus on children specifically.
