Governor pushes local governments to vaccinate in rural areas
Nearly all New York COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted after the State reached the 70% vaccination threshold, but there’s still a push for shots in areas where the vaccination rates are low.

Herkimer County Director of Public Health Christina Cain says the Herkimer County Health Department is now actively working to get vaccinations to the more rural parts of the County. Part of the efforts involve building relationships and engaging in conversation about COVID-19. Every time that virus replicates in your body it gives it a chance to mutate, so you could be the origin of a really bad new mutation that’s even worse than what we’ve seen, that is not you know discriminate of children, she said. Is not you know the same survivability, or the same hospitalization rate.

HERKIMER, N.Y. – Herkimer County Public Health is working to distribute vaccines, but like other counties, their supply doesn’t meet the demand.
Director of Public Health Christina Cain says the county only gets enough vaccines for a fraction of the population each week. Specifically, at Public Health, we might get 100-200 doses weekly. We have a population in this county of just over 64,000 people. That doesn t go very far, she said.
Since Wednesday, December 23rd, 2020 Oneida County has seen an additional 879 positive COVID-19 cases.
During that time frame, 13 total patients have lost their life and that brings the death toll since the Pandemic began to 214. As of Sunday 146 county residents are hospitalized. There are 124 at Mohawk Valley Health System and 22 at Rome Memorial Hospital.
8 County Residents are hospitalized outside the county and 11 hospitalized residents are nursing home patients.
As of Sunday there are 4,756 active positive cases. On the other hand, a total of 4,440 cases have been resolved. Those 4,756 active cases have been placed under mandatory isolation and subsequently 2,563 people have been placed under a mandatory quarantine.
