Is September, the LGWM board commissioned external consultants to conduct a review of the programme amid growing concerns about delays. The findings were made public on Friday and made for damning reading. It found that the programme was “at risk of failing to deliver”, and needed to be paused so major problems could be addressed. Problems, may that have persisted since LGWM’s inception five years ago, included under-resourcing, staff shortages, lack of expertise, and a lack of “strategic leadership”.

Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL), one of the world’s largest independent global bus manufacturers, has welcomed the announcement by the New Zealand Government of NZD50 million funding to help councils fully decarbonise their public transport bus fleet by 2035. ADL is to build zero emission buses in New Zealand in cooperation with local partner Kiwi Bus Builders, creating jobs and adding value to the local economy.
The funding to be given to Councils for the procurement of zero emission buses is part of a series of measures intended to help meet New Zealand’s 2050 carbon neutral target that have been announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Transport Minister Michael Wood. By decarbonising the bus fleet, the country aims to prevent up to 4.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The Government announced it would pass clean car import standard legislation this year to cut emissions and fuel costs, as well as committing to purchasing only zero emission public transport buses from 2025 and ensuring the current public transport bus fleet is decarbonised by 2035. It s great news for New Zealand and great news for the future of travel and our key export industries which rely on low carbon air transport, Foran said. We flew the world s first commercial aviation test flight powered by a sustainable second-generation biofuel in 2008, and today s announcement brings us a step closer to making commercial flights powered by Sustainable Aviation Fuels a reality.
