News Story of the Year: COVID-19 changed how we lived during 2020

“Human-to-human coronavirus transmission confirmed.” On Jan. 21, this headline and Associated Press story appeared in the bottom right-hand corner of The Daily Nonpareil’s front page. It was the first time the Nonpareil had picked up a story about an outbreak that was happening on the other side of the world. It was not the first news of the pandemic. Stories of an outbreak in China had dotted national news outlets — in print, television and digital. At the time, many of us didn’t know what exactly a “coronavirus” was. Pottawattamie County asks school districts to survey teachers about vaccine

Pottawattamie County Public Health has asked all school districts in the county, both public and private, to survey teachers ahead of vaccination distribution. Public Health Director Matt Wyant said the survey asks teachers if they re interested in taking the vaccine, and will help the department plan distribution. Wyant said he expects the state to put teachers in the 1B priority group for the vaccine, after the first wave is doled out to health care workers, first responders and long-term care facility employees. There have been 82 COVID-19 deaths in the county, according to Iowa Department of Public Health data. There have been 14 new deaths since the state changed its death reporting policy on Dec. 7.
