Nearly a thousand Pottawatomie County educators and school staff members participated in a COVID-19 vaccine clinic Thursday and Friday hosted by the Pottawatomie County Health Department and SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital-Shawnee.
According to Angi Mohr, President of SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital-Shawnee, the hospital was happy to work with the health department and provide this opportunity to districts.
“Teachers and education staff do very important work as they help shape the minds of our youngest community members and it’s important to us to keep them healthy, Mohr said.
Tecumseh Public School Assistant Superintendent Robert Kinsey said around 126 faculty and staff received their first of the Moderna vaccine shot Thursday, Feb. 25.

Within days of emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration, Citizen Potawatomi Nation Health Services began receiving and administering vaccines to combat the coronavirus in central Oklahoma.
Along with the other self-governance tribes across Oklahoma, CPNHS opted to get its primary vaccine doses through the Indian Health Service rather than through the Oklahoma State Department of Health.
CPNHS Chief Medical Officer Dr. Adam Vascellaro said the decision to go through IHS was deliberate. This move increases the chances of both the tribe and its pandemic vaccination partner, the Pottawatomie County Health Department, having dual distributor access to the COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine for the populations they serve.

Shawnee woman dies with COVID-19; active cases waning

Another Shawnee woman has lost her life as reports of COVID-19 deaths in the county have been coming in every two to three days for the past month. Last month, on Dec. 23, there were 29 deaths in the county; that number has gone up by 20 in the past four weeks. Similarly, in December the deaths of Shawnee victims numbered 23, compared to 37 now 15 more in the past month.
Cases
Though figures fluctuate, and deaths are being reported often right now, cases are showing a decline for the time being.
In the state, there were 35,471 active cases a month ago, while Monday s count shows 32,546.

According to an Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) announcement released Monday, some of the information rolled out with the COVID-19 vaccination process is no longer accurate.
Oklahoma received updates Friday from Operation Warp Speed on what can now be expected for the state’s vaccine supply moving forward.
“After previous communication with Operation Warp Speed about a reserved supply of second doses for both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, we learned that no such stockpile exists,” OSDH reports.
Though Operation Warp Speed (OWS) previously shared there would be a significant increase in supply provided to states in the short term, OSDH reports it received word that such an increase will not occur in the short term.
