Tensions between the parties escalated when restrictions arising from the COVID-19 pandemic caused the cancellation of the annual Rose Parade and barred fans from attending the Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena. The game was ultimately moved to Arlington, Texas, marking the first time since 1942 the Rose Bowl game was played outside of Pasadena.
The Los Angeles federal court lawsuit states that the tournament association invoked the force majeure clause of its contract, maintaining that the pandemic was out of its control, so the association had the right to move the game out of Pasadena to AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
Lawyers for Pasadena are expected to urge a federal judge Friday to dismiss a lawsuit brought by the Tournament of Roses Association over rights to the name and trademarks for the Rose Bowl Game.

The Lakeland Union High School Parade Band will be part of a composite band invited to march down the streets of Pasadena during the 2023 Tournament of Roses Parade.
At its last meeting, the Lakeland board of education approved the request of band leader Bill Richter for LUHS to be part of that event as they march down a five-mile stretch of Colorado Boulevard.
The mass band will comprise 10 area high schools, including Rhinelander, Eagle River, Three Lakes and Wausau. Upward of 200 members will wear the uniforms of their schools, but it’s expected all members will don matching headwear.
The 2022 parade will adopt the theme that had been planned for this year s event, Dream. Believe. Achieve. But the theme will be expanded beyond its original focus on education to celebrate the perseverance of health care professionals, first responders and essential workers during the pandemic. We look forward to working with the city of Pasadena and our other valued partners throughout the year as we prepare for the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena on January 1, 2022, Miller said.
This year was only the fourth time since 1891 that the parade was canceled, with the three previous cancellations occurring during the wartime years of 1942, 1943 and 1945.
Pasadena urged a California federal judge Tuesday to toss a trademark infringement suit from the organization behind the Rose Bowl football game, saying the lawsuit is "not about trademarks" but rather the Tournament of Roses Association seeking approval to move the game out of the city during future emergency events.
