Red Sox closer Matt Barnes goes on IL due to COVID-19 symptoms

Boston Red Sox All-Star closer Matt Barnes was placed on the injured list Tuesday after experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the team was waiting on results of a PCR test conducted Tuesday to learn whether Barnes is positive for COVID-19. He said Barnes, who is vaccinated, remained at the team hotel in Detroit.
Cora said the entire team was tested Tuesday and that one other player had symptoms. He said the unidentified player tested negative. (Barnes is) going to go through the whole testing stuff and hopefully everything goes well, Cora said prior to Tuesday s game against the Tigers. As a group, we got tested today. So far, everything has turned out to be negative, which is positive.

“There was one incident where a fan came running down and was being extra harsh towards one of our Black players,” he said on Fox Sports Radio on Tuesday (June 9).
“I just got fed up and I stood up and told him to ’Shut the F up, and if you don’t like it get out of here…I will never forget that moment because I was boiling. You could see the tension, and it wasn’t the same tension that was towards a white player.”
