Letter: Why another $4 billion to Israel?
As part of the 2021 NDAA, Congress just voted $4 billion a year in U.S. tax money to Israel despite its long record of human rights abuses, systemic racism, and injury to American and Palestinian Christians, Muslims and progressive Jews. Senate Democrats tried to include an amendment to prevent Israel from using U.S. security assistance funds to unilaterally annex West Bank territory, but were defeated.
That $4 billion in military aid to Israel might be a surprise to Americans, whose mainstream media have yet to report this news. Israel is the only Middle Eastern country with nuclear weapons but American officials are prevented from saying so publicly. U.S. media have not reported the efforts of hundreds of illegal Israeli settlers on Thursday to disrupt prayers at the Greek Orthodox St. Saba Christian Monastery, east of Bethlehem, by intimidating the monks who gathered there to pray. Israel’s military occupation of Palestine continues in its 53rd year. In particular, Palestinians in Gaza are suffering under a callous siege. The U.S. administration has withdrawn aid for Palestinian hospitals in East Jerusalem and for the United Nations’ humanitarian work in the occupied Palestinian territory.
President Trump’s so-called peace proposal is little more than a justification for the occupation and a false promise of prosperity to Palestinians at the cost of their freedom and independence. In spite of promises to the contrary in recent peace deals with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, Israel’s annexation of Palestinian land and resources continues with the recent approval of 3,000 new settlement homes in the West Bank.

Christmas is a delightful season, the most wonderful time of the year indeed. And yet, as Palestinian Christians living in North America and Australia, we experience a strange disconnect during the festive season.
We watch as shopping malls become inundated with Christmas trees, jolly Santas, candy canes, reindeer and sleighs. We are accustomed to the usual nativity display of three - usually white - wise men approaching a white Jesus, Mary and Joseph (Issa, Mariam and Yousef in Arabic).
