RI Education Commissioner Infante-Green
In a wide-ranging interview, Rhode Island Commissioner of Education Angélica Infante-Green discussed the state of education in Rhode Island and all the hot-button issues.
As schools across the state try to recover from the impacts of shutdowns and online learning due to the pandemic, the Commissioner faces challenges in negotiations with the Providence Teachers Union, legislative battles at the State House over school funding and charter schools and implementing a strategy to improve Providence Public Schools.
It has been nearly two years since the Johns Hopkins University report was released which found that Providence Public Schools were among the worst in the country.
The nation s leading business publication wrote:
“Very little visible student learning was going on in the majority of classrooms and schools we visited most especially in the middle and high schools,” the report says. “Our review teams encountered many teachers and students who do not feel safe in school. There is widespread agreement that bullying, demeaning, and even physical violence are occurring within the school walls at very high levels.”

PTU rallies for contract, end to state takeover
The Providence Teachers Union (PTU) is demanding an end to the state takeover of the troubled school district.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The Providence Teachers Union (PTU) is demanding an end to the state takeover of the troubled school district.
Providence teachers and families marched from the state house to the Department of Education Tuesday evening as part of their demonstration.
“Imploring our state reps and senators to listen to us, to have a meeting with us, and rethink the takeover,” said PTU President Maribeth Calabro.
The state takeover began in 2019 following the abysmal results of the Johns Hopkins report.
