PROVIDENCE The state education commissioner and the mayor of Providence have called on embattled Providence Schools Supt. Harrison Peters to resign.
Peters admitted this week that he had known about a previous incident in Hillsborough County, Florida, in which Alege was accused of popping the toes of five male students as a form of discipline.
Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green asked for Peters resignation on Tuesday, after she met with Gov. Dan McKee and members of the community, according to Department of Education spokesman Victor Morente. McKee s office said asking for the resignation was the right thing to do.
On Wednesday, The Providence School Board unanimously passed a no-confidence vote on Peters after meeting in closed session.

Rhode Island Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green has asked for the resignation of Providence Superintendent Harrison Peters, who was tasked with leading the district through the state’s takeover of the city’s school system. The request comes after days of public scrutiny and criticism of school district leaders for the hiring of a top administrator, Olayika Alege.
Last week, Alege was charged with assaulting a minor at a Warwick gym, for grabbing and massaging the young person’s foot. Alege was placed on leave, and later asked to resign by the district.
