As Pat Kaczmarek walked through Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Washington County recently, she was startled to see a COVID-19 vaccination clinic underway.
She said she saw only clinic workers standing idly by. No one, it appeared, was in line to receive the vaccine.
Kaczmarek works at a grocery store and is at greater risk of coronavirus complications due to her age, 66.

Lane County reports 143 new COVID-19 cases Saturday
Lane County reported 143 new confirmed or presumptive cases of COVID-19 Saturday, raising the countywide total to 7,664. There are 432 people considered infectious, an increase from 352 the day before.
The death toll did not increase from Friday s count of 96. There are still 40 people hospitalized, the same as Friday.
The county had administered 5,574 first vaccine doses Friday, up 4.7% from Wednesday s 5,319.
Lane County hospitals to distribute more vaccines
Lane County hospitals McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center and PeaceHealth will be assisting community vaccination efforts, Lane County Public Health announced Friday.
The hospitals will vaccinate high-priority, frontline health care professionals.
Registered nurse Jeremy Shipley worked in the unit and contracted the virus. He’s recovering but it’s been devastating, he said, to catch the coronavirus despite his meticulous attention to safety.
“I’ve been a champion of personal protection and caution,” he said. “I feel overwhelming shame that I was the one on our staff who went down.”
Several Oregon hospitals have had virus outbreaks. A total of 158 staff and patients have contracted COVID-19 at Salem Hospital since June. Nearly 90 have been infected at Good Shepherd Hospital in Hermiston since summer. Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg has reported 61 COVID cases sincesummer.

Providence Health & Services has shut down a unit of its Northeast Portland hospital after a major COVID-19 outbreak that has led to 49 staffers and patients contracting the virus.
The outbreak, the largest to date at a metro-area hospital in the Portland area, is believed to have begun around Dec. 20 and was centered in the hospital’s 4-k unit. That is not a a COVID unit, but rather treats patients who are stable but in need of ongoing, intense care, like stroke and traumatic brain injury victims.
