CRISPR/Cas9 System Could Support Efforts to Conserve Fragile Reef Ecosystems

CRISPR/Cas9 System Could Support Efforts to Conserve Fragile Reef Ecosystems Written by AZoCleantechDec 22 2020 Researchers can now use the CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing system to gain insights into, and perhaps enhance, the response of corals to the environmental stresses caused by climate change. Community Scoop » These Are The Plastic Items That Most Kill Whales, Dolphins, Turtles And Seabirds

How do we save whales and other marine animals from plastic in the ocean? Our new review shows reducing plastic pollution can prevent the deaths of beloved marine species. Over 700 marine species, including half of the world’s cetaceans (such as whales and dolphins), all of its sea turtles and a third of its seabirds, are known to ingest plastic. When animals eat plastic, it can block their digestive system, causing a long, slow death from starvation. Sharp pieces of plastic can also pierce the gut wall, causing infection and sometimes death. As little as one piece of ingested plastic can kill an animal.

Join MIT Sloan Experts for the next Twitter Chat on December 16 at 11 a.m. ET. Host Will Knight (@WillKnight) will speak with Renée Richardson Gosline (@reneegosline), a Senior Lecturer at MIT Sloan and a Principal Research Scientist at MIT s Initiative on the Digital Economy, about artificial intelligence, human decision-making, and bias. The chat will explore the role that technology plays in helping people make decisions, and the consequences it has on society at large. Organizations around the world are increasingly deploying technology and AI-infused algorithms to help customers make decisions, and Gosline’s research explores the ways in which the technology industry can fight bias in machines.
