With Barclays planning to shut its doors in May and HSBC in July, the town will only be left with just the Principality Building Society. Lisa McCormick, Barclays Market Director for North Wales said: “The decision to close a branch is never an easy one. However, customers are increasingly using alternatives to branches to do their banking. As a result, we are seeing a sustained fall in branch visits across the UK. “This is reflected at the Prestatyn branch where there has been a 14 per cent reduction in counter transactions in the two years to March 2020. In addition, over four fifths (84 per cent) of our customers at the branch are also using different ways to bank.
Principality Building Society has appointed Richard Wales as commercial lending director.
Wales replaces Peter Hughes after he stepped down to focus on family commitments last September having spent 18 years at the building society.
Wales has worked at the lender since 2012 but prior to this he spent time at HSBC in various management roles for 20 years.
Julie-Ann Haines, chief executive at Principality Building Society, said: “Richard is an excellent appointment with his extensive banking experience, and he has great insight into the expectations of our customers having fulfilled several senior roles within Principality Commercial since joining.
“He has an exciting vision for our commercial business but he’s also acutely aware of the challenges currently faced by our clients brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Savers looking for an easy access account or a regular saver account will find it more difficult than last year to get a top rate deal as banks and building societies increasingly restrict their accounts. These restrictions include limiting accounts to existing customers, specific geographic regions or only allowing applications in branch – an option that is limited due to the current Coronavirus restrictions. Other exclusions include Virgin Money that restricts its regular savings accounts to those that use their Home Buying Coach app and Principality Building Society’s regular savings account, the Learner Earner Issue 3 that is only available when both a parent and a child open a relevant account.
