Both our residents and small businesses have been struggling through the pandemic and as we come out of it, we should do all we can to assist and ensure we all land on our feet. Susan Smentek, Elmhurst Ward 1 Candidate

N/A The single most pressing issue facing Ward 1 is , and this is what I intend to do about it. Ward 1 in Elmhurst includes neighborhoods such as College View, Pick Subdivision, the Tree Streets (between the Metra tracks and North Avenue), and the western half of City Centre. Residents of the First ward have voiced their concerns about several pressing issues, including stormwater management, construction site standards and code enforcement, and safety on neighborhood streets (in fact, my own child was hit last July by a motorist who ran through a stop sign). With regard to these issues, I will work to ensure that the College View stormwater management project is completed, to develop construction site standards and code enforcement that minimizes the impact of development on neighboring residences and businesses, and to expand the city s approach to controlling high speeds on neighborhood streets.

Jennifer Veremis, Elmhurst Ward 1 Candidate

Elmhurst 1st Ward Alderman & Elmhurst City Centre Board of Directors The single most pressing issue facing our city is , and this is what I intend to do about it. A pressing challenge is the Covid-19 pandemic as it relates to our residents and the city s financial stability, business growth, and retention. Sales taxes, which are generated by local businesses, are the most significant revenue source (28%) of the city s general fund. General fund expenditures include departments such as police, fire, streets, and sanitation. Because of the pandemic, sales taxes in 2020 were down significantly, although not as much as predicted, and the pandemic is not over. Therefore, it will continue to have residual effects on our economy.
