Public Protector steps in to mediate artists, NAC impasse over ‘misappropriated’ funds Updated Nokukhanya N Mntambo Share this: Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has stepped in to mediate the impasses between South African artists and the National Arts Council (NAC).  Pic: Neo Motloung They claim the money allocated for artists through the R300 million Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme has disappeared.  Following a public outcry, Mkhwebane and Deputy Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka met with Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa, members of the council led by acting Chairperson Princess Celenhle Dlamini last week.  A separate meeting was held with the artists on Friday.

28 musicians living with disabilities to benefit from R300k Covid-19 grant By Mpiletso Motumi Share Johannesburg - The Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP) is bringing some form of economic relief to the Southern African Disabled Musicians Association’s (SADMA) artists. The founders and board members of the association consist of blind musicians who have vast experience and expertise in the music industry. They received R300 000 in grant money to help their artists and to create an opportunity to raise more funds. As with everyone in the music industry, SADMA doors were shut due to the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions on events and social gatherings in the country. However, for musician with disabilities the burden was that much harder as opportunities for them to make a living was already a difficulty.

Marks Mangaba, who has been tasked with removing the group also known as Abahlali base NAC met artists on Wednesday, saying he wanted to understand their challenges.
