The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) recognized Colonial Group, Inc. as the latest honoree in the Georgia Business History Initiative with the dedication of a new historical marker in downtown Savannah. The marker recognizes the 100th anniversary of the company’s founding by Raymond Demere in 1921.

Mayor Van Johnson and members of Savannah City Council have consistently pointed to affordable housing as a major issue facing the city, but they have taken limited steps to address it during the past 16 months.
Elected officials should now have clearer direction with the recent release of recommended strategies from the Housing Savannah Task Force, which was created by the mayor and aldermen in 2020.
Formed to tackle one of the city s most prominent issues, the Housing Savannah Task Force has launched a survey to gather input on affordability issues and challenges facing Savannah’s housing market.
Announced last July, the group is co-chaired by former city manager Israel Small and Brynn Grant, president and CEO of the United Way of the Coastal Empire. The task force is actively working on Savannah’s first Housing Affordability Plan, which will keep housing affordable for residents.
The survey is open though May 23 and can be accessed through the task force s page on the city of Savannah s website. It seeks to identify problems facing those struggling to find and maintain affordable housing, such as utility cost, landlord issues and repair costs.
