AUSTIN, Texas – Homeowners throughout Texas are struggling to find contractors to repair storm damages since the historic freeze in February.
The increase in repair needs has created a lack of labor throughout the state, so cities are teaming up with nonprofit groups to bring volunteer contractors from across the country to help Texans fix their homes.
Orlando Chiacchio is one of those volunteers for Water Mission, which provides water aid during natural disasters. The New Yorker flew to Austin after hearing about a need for contractors on the news.

Crisis Cleanup Hotline to be open through Friday

Cleanup hotline extended
The Crisis Cleanup Hotline for residents who need help cleaning up after the winter storm has been extended and will remain open through Friday.
More than 700 calls for help have been received to date through this hotline from Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties. Austin Disaster Relief Network, Samaritan’s Purse, CTX Voluntary Organizations Associated in Disaster and the volunteer management platform Crisis Cleanup are collaborating with the five counties to include the cities of Austin and Round Rockt. Homeowners who have few resources and abilities can request assistance in the removal of fallen trees, limbs, interiors of home water damage, plumbing repairs and various storm related damages.

Water Mission, a Christian engineering nonprofit, is collaborating with Austin Disaster Relief Network and Plumbers Without Borders to provide free services to Central Texas residents with burst pipes and extensive water damage from Winter Storm Uri.
The groups will collaborate to mobilize skilled volunteer labor and plumbing-related materials and supplies, getting safe water flowing in homes for the most vulnerable residents, including the elderly, disabled, uninsured and underinsured.
Homeowners who need plumbing repairs as a result of the frigid temperatures can call the Crisis Cleanup Hotline at 800-329-8052 to request assistance.
