I don’t know what has been in the water at Square Enix the last few years, but I’m happy for it. The 8-bit and 16-bit Final Fantasy games can only be re-released and/or remade so many times, I suppose. We’ve received localizations of classic games I never thought we would see like Romancing SaGa 2 and
SaGa, SaGa Scarlet Grace, get a release on new platforms and in new regions. Even the classic Game Boy games that kicked off the
SaGa series (unbeknownst to those of us in the West at the time) got reissued on the Nintendo Switch. And now things come full circle, after a fashion.

An unrelated note before we begin. In between this and the last column, Blade Braxton, of Wrestlecrap, passed away suddenly. I had the pleasure of writing for Wrestlecrap for ten years, and, though not nearly as much as RD did, I got to know Blade. One time, he was in Detroit, visiting his then-girlfriend, and it was Wrestlemania Sunday (WM24, to be precise). They couldn’t find a bar of restaurant playing it. We weren’t intending on watching it, but when I saw their distress, I shot him a message inviting them over. I got to know Troy Ferguson, the man behind Blade, that day. He was like a big kid, but in the best way; endless, boundless enthusiasm. We laughed when the power went out on the Playboy Lumberjill match. We almost fell off our seats with the melodrama from Shawn Michaels’ “I’m sorry, I love you”. Sony has announced that they will be closing down their PS3 online store on August 27. As someone that still plays their PS3 regularly, this is a sore blow, especially because there are still a lot of games on the system that have not been added to the PS4 and PS5 stores. Unlike Nintendo with the Wii, Sony will still allow you to download purchases made prior to the shutdown, which means that you have a few months to round out your collection before some titles disappear from sale for the foreseeable future.
