Gov. Gianforte Welcomes Montana Guard Troops Home
Last night, I had the opportunity to visit with some of our Montana National Guard members before they returned home.
To all the Guard members who ve spent the last few weeks in DC - thank you for fulfilling your duty and keeping our nation s capital safe.
After Guard troops were kicked out of the US Capitol last week, Gov. Gianforte ordered the troops home. As KGVO s Peter Christian reported, the governor opened up his Friday press conference with these remarks:
GIANFORTE: Thousands of National Guardsmen were forced to leave the Capitol building and were sent outside into parking garages to rest. Some had no heat or access to facilities. This is no way to treat the men and women in uniform. What happened to them was a national disgrace. Montana Governor Greg Gianforte sent a letter to President Joe Biden this week saying he would be willing to partner with the new administration on shared priorities, then added he would be a strong voice for Montana when the Governor disagrees with Biden policies.
While Governor Gianforte began his letter with a note of congratulations on Biden s inauguration, focus immediately turned to the President s executive order that terminates construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.
Governor Gianforte wrote of the broad support for the pipeline, including bipartisan support from former Democratic Governors Steve Bullock and Brian Schweitzer. I was disappointed that you signed an executive order today to halt its construction, said Gov. Gianforte.

Opening his press conference in Helena on Friday, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte had scathing words for officials in Washington. D.C. who sent National Guard troops out of federal buildings and into unheated parking garages, leading him to order Montana’s troops home immediately.
