Mumbai, Jan 15 : A mini-general election at the grassroots level was completed without major incidents in 14,234 Gram Panchayats across 34 of Maharashtra s 36 districts (except Mumbai and Mumbai Suburban districts) for 125,709 seats, officials said on Friday.
A Maharashtra State Election Commission spokesperson said that, as per the provisional figures available, approximately 66 per cent of the voters turned out and the response was overwhelming especially from women and youth, besides voters in the Maoist-hit district of Gadchiroli.
From the total 14,234 Gram Panchayats, 12,776 went to vote as the members in 1,461 village councils were declared elected unopposed.

New Delhi: Amid reports of panchayat seats being put up for ‘auction’, the Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) has decided to scrap elections in two villages â Umrane in Nashik district and Kondamali in Nandurbar.
Indian Express report, ‘auctions’ in these two villages fetched Rs 2 crore and Rs 42 lakh respectively. Gram panchayat elections are scheduled to be held in the state on Friday, but the newspaper reported that in many villages the results are a foregone conclusion after ‘consensus candidates’ â a euphemism for getting elected unopposed after holding an ‘auction’ â have been arrived at.

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi has written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in which she has reminded him of the commitments made to the Dalits and Adivasis in the Common Minimum Programme of the Maha Vikas Agadi government in Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra State Election Commission on Friday announced schedule for Gram Panchayat elections. Polling for 14,234 Gram Panchayats will be held on January 15, 2021. Nomination papers can be filed from December 23 to 30, 2020. Results will be declared on January 18, 2021.
The Gram Panchayat elections assumes significance as both the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVP) alliance would want to win as many seats as possible to strengthen their presence at the grassroot level.Â
