MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Thursday told the state government to consider imposing at least for 15 days a “lockdown like last year” to curb the spread of Covid-19.
“We are not issuing a mandamus (direction). Do you think that the (present) restrictions are working? That only people with urgent business are on the roads? People are out without reason. At least for 15 days, if people stay indoors, we may expect better results,’’ said a bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Girish Kulkarni. They asked advocate general Ashutosh Kumbhakoni to “please advise your government.”

MUMBAI: Fresh restrictions on travel, attendance in offices and wedding functions announced by the Maharashtra government to check the Covid-19 spread came into force on Thursday night.
Maharashtra, facing an unprecedented surge in coronavirus cases, is already under severe restrictions since April 14 and the fresh lockdown-like curbs were announced on Wednesday to break the chain of viral transmission in the state.
Prohibitory orders, banning assembly of five or more people at once place, are in force till 7am on May 1, while non-essential activities are not being allowed.

Maharashtra relief and rehabilitation minister Vijay Wadettiwar on Monday said the government is looking at a complete lockdown in the state. The government has scheduled a cabinet meet on Tuesday and, according to people aware of the development, a decision on enforcing a complete lockdown in the state could be taken at this meeting.
“We have as of yet not gone for a full lockdown, we have just put a curfew,” Wadettiwar said. “Now (with cases rising), everyone from traders and common people to political parties are asking us to impose a full lockdown. We have conveyed this to the chief minister, and we are expecting that a decision on the lockdown would be taken in the next two days.”
