Nearly a year into the pandemic, wearing a face mask probably feels like second nature. Masks are on your mind before you head out the door, they come in all sorts of different styles, and they minimize the spread of the virus.
But what do masks say about us? Are they going to be a part of our lives for the foreseeable future? Are they the new fashion accessory to be paired with any new clothing purchase?

Protesters call for federal civil rights probe into fatal police shooting in Newark

Civil rights activists are calling on New Jersey’s top federal prosecutor to investigate the fatal shooting of Carl Dorsey III by a Newark plainclothes detective, after authorities released a videotape of the chaotic, deadly encounter just after midnight on New Year’s Day, and appeared to contradict an earlier assertion by local officials that weapons were recovered at the scene.
“Tonight, I’m calling publicly on Rachel Honig, the acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, to launch a civil rights investigation into the murder of Carl Dorsey,” said People’s Organization for Progress Chairman Lawrence Hamm, addressing two dozen protestors gathered in the bitter cold Thursday night at the scene of shooting on South 11th Street at Woodlawn Avenue.

During the George Floyd protests, New York City saw plenty of violence, and Newark saw none. Across the state, Camden protests were peaceful, while violence broke out across the river in Philadelphia. These New Jersey police departments are embracing reform and de-escalation tactics.

Newark Police officers did not fire a single shot during the calendar year 2020, and the city didn’t pay a single dime to settle police brutality cases. That’s never happened, at least in the city’s modern history.
