A weekend tally indicating the highest single-day visitor count since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic was positive news, with things likely to go in the opposite direction upon further review.
High Attendance
Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) reports 34,252 visitors entered the Chinese Special Administrative Region (SAR) last Friday, April 16, for the highest single count since January 2020, with hotel occupancy at 61 percent between April 9-15.
The Jump
That represents a 12.7 percent event-on-event improvement from Spring Festival Golden Week in February (48.3 percent occupancy), and reflects a welcome wave of activity.

HONG KONG: The Ruins of Saint Paul s Cathedral, Macau s most famous landmark, are filled with visitors and tour guides holding flags aloft in the run-up to China s golden week holiday.
It is a scene neighbouring Hong Kong has not experienced for more than a year since the Covid-19 pandemic arrived, putting the city into lockdown and keeping travellers away.
Capturing the buzz outside St Paul s in a live broadcast on Tuesday, Hong Kong restaurateur and YouTube celebrity Alex Yeung Kwun-wah spoke to a man surnamed Li from Shunde, in Guangdong province, who is visiting with his wife and son for the five-day holiday starting on May 1, Labour Day.

BANGKOK, 23 February 2021: The Pacific Asia Travel Association has appointed a committee to shortlist applicants for the CEO post with an announcement on the successful candidate scheduled possibly as early as April.
The incumbent CEO, Mario Hardy, informed the association in
2019 that he would not seek an extension when his contract expired in December
2020. However, following the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown in March 2020 he agreed
to continue for another six months until June 2021.
Pacific Asia Travel Association chairperson Soon Hwa Wong in
a message to the members emailed Sunday, said the search for Hardy’s successor
was underway and confirmed the appointment of a selection committee.
Officials in Macau are targeting 2025 to complete a railway transportation system linking the islands of Cotai and Hengqin.

The Macau Light Rapid Transit (LRT) rail system currently serves much of the Cotai area. The transportation network runs from the Taipa Ferry Terminal at Macau International Airport, south to the Lotus Checkpoint, and then northwest to Ocean Park.
In the coming years, Macau will extend the LRT west across the Lotus Bridge into Hengqin. The roughly 1.4-mile extension will include half a mile underground.
