Ross University donates over $8,500

Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) is excited to spread some cheer this holiday season to several local
non-profit organisations.
RUSM Associate Dean of Medical Sciences Dr Rhona McIntyre, MBBS, FAAP, FRCP (C), said, “As we face this unprecedented time, RUSM is taking this opportunity to give back to our community through more than $8, 500 in donations to charitable organisations,” she continued, “We are so thankful to be part of this community and are happy to support these worthy causes.”
A virtual ceremony took place on December 15, 2020, where donations were made to Eden Lodge Charitable Trust, QEH pediatric unit, Type 1 Diabetes Registry, Cancer Support Services, Sandy Lane Charitable Trust, Precious Touch Foundation, Because of Jenna Trust, Variety – the Children’s Charity of Barbados, and Forlam Clinic.

Usually at this time of year, peace, joy and goodwill ought to be extended to all, especially after a difficult and trying year.
But there are also glaring truths that force us to confront and root out the ugliness in our society regardless of the season.
Abuse in all its forms is dreadful, long-lasting and persistent. It has no place in a healthy, progressive society.
Indeed, it is hard to imagine anything worse than causing a child to suffer on purpose, be it sexual, physical, or verbal.
But this is the everyday story of life for far too many Barbadian children.
Legal fix urged amid ‘alarming’ spike in abuse

An alarming increase in child abuse reports to a national hotline has led noted children rights advocate Faith Marshall-Harris to call on the authorities to introduce the child rights legislation to legally tackle these issues.
Marshall-Harris declared she has been forced to inform Barbadians about an increase in emotional and verbal abuse against children, following a rise in calls from frustrated and helpless children and concerned adults to the FMH (Faith Marshall-Harris) SLCT (Sandy Lane Charitable Trust) Children’s Helpline to make complaints.
She said: “A lot of the calls that I get I can put down to some form of abuse.
