PERSPECTIVE: What are the various considerations behind land-use planning in Singapore? Many Singaporeans were concerned over two development plans recently, one at Clementi forest and the other at Dover forest. This has led to a question on how Singapore strikes a balance between nature conservation and development. In Parliament on Feb. 1, Minister for National Development Desmond Lee spoke at length on the development plans for green spaces in Singapore in response to questions filed by six Members of Parliament (MPs). Lee highlighted the followings: Singapore s approach to conservation and land-use as a city-state is unique. Land use planning is a constant act of balance and land-use needs change between generations. Therefore, flexibility in planning is necessary to cater to the needs and aspirations of each generation.
