WASHINGTON – The private firm hired to audit Maricopa County’s 2020 elections said this week that its work was funded by $5.7 million in donations from conservative groups, a revelation that raised as many questions as it answered for critics.
The department said that auditors could face criminal or civil penalties if they flouted elections laws.
The Arizona audit is led by a private contractor called Cyber Ninjas, whose owner has shared conspiracy theories that the election was stolen from former President Donald J. Trump.Credit.Matt York/Associated Press

WASHINGTON The Justice Department on Wednesday sent another warning shot to Republican state legislatures that have initiated private audits of voting tabulations broadly viewed as efforts to cast doubt on the results of the presidential election.
The department warned that auditors could face criminal and civil penalties if they destroy any records related to the election or intimidate voters in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1960 and federal laws prohibiting voter intimidation.

Cyber Ninjas, the firm leading the Arizona Senate s audit of Maricopa County s 2020 election, released a list of its sponsors on Wednesday after months of criticism over a lack of disclosures about the sources of funding for the controversial review.
Doug Logan, the CEO of Cyber Ninjas, said the audit effort received $3.25 million from the America Project, nearly $1 million from America s Future, over $600,000 from Voices and Votes, $550,000 from Defending the Republic, and $280,000 from LDFFTAR/EIFFTAR.
All of the supporters listed are conservative groups, some with Trump allies such as retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and attorney Sidney Powell attached to them, a review by the
