MyIX Urges Government To Review Cabotage Policy After Facebook s New Cables Skip Malaysia

20Shares Malaysia Internet Exchange (MyIX) has recently made a statement that is addressed to the Malaysian government which urging it to reinstate the cabotage exemption on foreign undersea cables repair vessels. This is in order to help attract foreign direct investment (FDI) within the digital infrastructure segment once again. The statement came just days after Facebook announced its plan to build two new undersea cables together with Google and a number of local telcos as well as data centre operators, that will link Singapore, Indonesia and the U.S. MyIX’s Chairman Chiew Kok Hin who is also the CEO of AIMS Data Centre, one of the region’s top data centre operators stated that the decision by Facebook is a significant loss for Malaysia.

Emerging markets to propel Asia-Pacific data centre sector in real estate, says JLL

PETALING JAYA (Feb 3): The Asia-Pacific data centre sector is poised to enter a new cycle of growth, led by the region’s larger emerging markets, according to JLL’s “The rise of new data centre growth markets” report this month.  The region is home to three of the world’s four most populous countries mainland China, India and Indonesia providing attractive locations and fuelling a new cycle of operators and investors’ opportunities. The rise of Internet usage, smartphone adoption, social media, e-gaming, video streaming and big data applications demand extra data centre capacity across the region.  JLL capital markets alternatives senior director Bob Tan said in a press release: “The sheer scale of growing data consumption makes data centre infrastructure a compelling global and regional opportunity for both investors and operators. TIME dotCom Acquires AVM Cloud In Bid To Expand Cloud Offerings

281Shares TIME dotCom has bought a 60% stake in leading local cloud services provider AVM Cloud Sdn Bhd for RM58.7 million, shoring up cloud computing as the newest pillar of its business. This development is the latest in what seems to be a race between local telcos to capitalise on the rapidly increasing interest in cloud products in Malaysia. TIME’s expansion into the cloud business is arguably a natural one – the company already operates data centres in addition to its fibre network services for consumer and enterprise alike. AIMS, the telco’s data centre division, is a well-known name in the local industry and is also the anchor site for the Malaysia Internet Exchange (MyIX).

No Malaysian ships with proper specs to fix undersea cables, says MyIX chairman

WHILE the Malaysia Shipowners’ Association (MASA) chairman Datuk Abdul Hak Md Amin says there are four Malaysian flagged and certified submarine cable repair vessels currently available for use by the industry, tech companies that own the undersea cables beg to differ. “There are no Malaysian flagged vessels that can undertake repairs of undersea cables according to the best practices recommended by the ICPC (International Cable Protection Committee),” says Chiew Kok Hin, chairman of the Malaysia Internet Exchange (MyIX). MyIX is an integrator between local and international internet service providers. Submarine cables are crucial as 95% of the world’s voice and data traffic rely on them to be transmitted. These undersea cables, meanwhile, are invariably linked to foreign companies such as Alibaba, Hitachi, NTT, Microsoft, IBM and Bridge Data Centres, among others.
