PETALING JAYA: Several groups representing shopping malls, retailers and other businesses want the Selangor Mentri Besar to adopt targeted lockdowns based on buildings instead of district or state-wide.
The groups are the Malaysia Shopping Malls Association, Malaysia Retailers Association, Malaysia Retail Chain Association, Bumiputra Retailers Organisation, Malaysia REIT Managers Association and the Malaysian Association of Theme Park and Family Attractions.
“We would like to reiterate that the enhanced movement control order is an appropriate tool to be imposed on critically infected and specific targeted areas instead of a blanket lockdown of the entire district and state.
“This sledgehammer approach unnecessarily harms and destroys lives and livelihoods in areas where the incidence of the pandemic is within control,” they said in an open letter to Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari yesterday.

Malls push for PPV project to resume 08 Jul 2021 / 09:40 H. Pix for representational purpose only.
WE were absolutely delighted and fully supported the minister’s call of “Let’s Do This Together” to accelerate the vaccination drive for the people.
We wish to reiterate that in April, we mooted the concept of shopping malls hosting as vaccination centres for the retail industry. We subsequently had preliminary discussions with the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force on May 6, and with the minister on May 21, which led to the precise and spot-on decision to implement the Public-Private Venture (PPV) for our industry with the vaccination centre programme under the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry.
Malls disappointed that PPV project put off to August 05 Jul 2021 / 09:09 H. Pix for representational purpose only.
PETALING JAYA: Malls are disappointed that their vaccine dispensing centre (PPV) project has been postponed to August.
The Malaysia Shopping Malls Association (PPK) mooted the concept of shopping malls hosting PPVs for the retail industry.
After preliminary discussions with Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF) on May 6 and MInister in charge Khairy Jamaluddin on May 21, a decision was made to implement the public-private collaboration for our industry with the PPVIN programme under the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (MDTCA).
“Spontaneously after this, more than 60 malls have offered to host PPVs and have agreed to deeply subsidise the operations,” PPK said in a statement yesterday.
