Relief announced for farmers; more needed

Staff writer kkellar@fortfrances.com Relief is on the way for farmers and agricultural producers in the Rainy River District, but there are worries it won’t be enough. At a press conference held Tuesday afternoon inside the Ontario Crops Research Centre – Emo, formerly the Emo Agricultural Research Station, Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford was joined via Zoom by Lisa Thompson, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to announce up to $2-million is being made available for area farmers to address the impacts the drought conditions in the region have had on their ability to grow crops and raise cattle. Dubbed the Northwestern Livestock Emergency Assistance Initiative, the funds will be split into two streams that are aimed at addressing the immediate need for feed in the district, as well as supporting farmers who need to purchase emergency equipment to combat the dry conditions.

Sales Barn and hops sector get boost

The long anticipated Sales Barn is nearing completion, and recently got a visit from MPP Greg Rickford. The Rainy River Cattlemen’s Association was awarded $829,700 by the province, through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to rebuild two sales barns, install an underground watering system, purchase a new scale system and improve the loading, penning and auction areas. The funding will allow the association to host more auctions and attract Ontario beef producers to the local market. The facility’s upgrades are expected to be complete and ready for unveiling at the season’s first Cattle Auction in August.

Local push to stop demolition of remaining mill

Staff Writer memara@fortfrances.com The paper mill in Fort Frances has been under demolition for almost a year, beginning in the fall of 2020. Because the mill’s significance is carved in the memory of many Fort Frances residents, many hoped that a new owner would return it to a functioning pulp manufacturing business. However, permit after permit has been issued for demolition and buildings have been brought down, along with any chance to bring a revival to fruition. Even though a demolition permit has been given to the Kraft Mill, the Town of Fort Frances has not received a demolition request for the Biomass Boiler.
