Editor’s note: Story has been updated to reflect that the Moundsville Country Club is a for-profit enitity. MOUNDSVILLE Shareholders in the Moundsville Country Club are being contacted to determine the future of the 81-year-old institution after the club has received a purchase offer from the Regional Economic Development Partnership. The partnership, commonly referred to as “RED,” offered $8.025 million in July 2019 to buy the country club and its 163.5 acres of land just south of Moundsville along W.Va. 2. The letter of intent from RED has a closing date of Dec. 31, 2021, club officials said.

JIM COCHRAN There will be two Soap Box Derby events in Marshall County this summer, both officially sanctioned. A first-year attraction will be the Ohio Valley Super Kids Derby which will take place on May 22 in Moundsville. It is open to special needs youngsters aged 7-16 from Belmont, Marshall, Ohio and Wetzel counties. A sanctioned derby in its sixth year will be held on June 5 on Fourth Street in Glen Dale. Since this will be the first Super Kids Derby, here is information related to the event: Super Kids is a National Organization that Governs Soap Box Derby Races for special needs children who will be partnered with an experienced Soap Box Derby driver.

JIM COCHRAN Local historian Thomas James recently donated three military reference books that he compiled and gave to the three Marshall County libraries–Moundsville, Cameron and Benwood-McMechen. The book is titled “Honored Patriots of Marshall County, West Virginia.” James undertook this research project at the invitation of the Marshall County Commission. His work details the military service of 464 county soldiers who died in the line of duty. The scope of the project encompasses those who served in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Gulf Wars. The names of these soldiers are engraved on five granite monuments in the Veterans Plaza on the Marshall County Courthouse.

Feb 23, 2021 Ralph Wesley Conner, Jr., 85, of Glen Dale, WV, passed away Sunday, February 21, 2021, in Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale. Ralph was born October 2, 1935, in Wheeling, WV, the son of the late Ralph W. Conner, Sr. and Hilda (Bowman) Conner. He was a retired chemical supervisor for L.C.P. Chemical; an avid golfer and member of the Moundsville Country Club; and a U.S. Navy veteran. He also enjoyed spending winters in Florida, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his three grandkids. In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Regina M. Conner. He is survived by his fiance’ and devoted partner, Jacqueline Olson; two children, Ralph “Rusty” (Lou Ann) Conner, III of Belmont, OH and Cheryl (Brian) Jones of Morgantown, WV; two sisters, JoAnn (Francis) Szafran and Nancy (Floyd) Venskoske, both of Moundsville; and three grandchildren, Amanda, Michael and Jessica Jones; numerous fur babies; and several extended family m
