A man who died in a house fire in Newry on Friday was 62-year-old Jimmy Thompson. Mr Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene of the blaze which happened in the Parkview area. Detectives from the Police Service’s Terrorism Investigation Unit have today arrested two men in connection with the activities of the new IRA.
Detective Superintendent Richard Campbell, Head of the Terrorism Investigation Unit, said: “Terrorism Investigation Unit detectives today arrested two men under the Terrorism Act in connection with the attempted murder of a female member of police staff, who is also a part time police officer, following the discovery of a viable explosive device beside the young mother’s car in Ballyquin Road, Dungiven on Monday 19th April.

Two men have been arrested by police investigating a bomb which was left near a policewoman s car in Co Derry last month.
The men, aged 36 and 44, were arrested in the Derry area.
The New IRA claimed it was responsible for leaving the device outside a property at Ballyquin Road near Dungiven on Monday April 19.
Police said the device, an explosive connected to flammable liquid, was left at the rear of the officer’s car, beside where her three-year-old daughter would normally sit.
