Update: Father Now Faces Capital Murder Charge in Death of Newborn Son

Alabama News Updated: Alabama News Network brought you live coverage of a news conference this morning as Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham and others updated the case of the father charged in the death of his newborn son, who had been reported missing. Cunningham, Chief Deputy Kevin Murphy and Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey were among those who spoke about the investigation, which still is unfolding. Caleb Whisnand, Sr. now faces a capital murder charge in the death of his five-week-old son Caleb “CJ” Whisnand, Jr. Last night, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said the father was charged with manslaughter and was being held on a $100,000 bond. After the baby’s body was recovered in rural Lowndes County, an autopsy was performed late last night, which officials say is the reason that the charge was upgraded. The father is now being held without bond.

Newly discovered evidence and witnesses led to Miles arrest, according to a news release from Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey s office.  Little was released regarding the case immediately after Brown s death. Police said they responded to the 4700 block of Park Towne Way shortly before midnight and found Brown dead.  Brown marked the city s 25th homicide victim of 2019.

Evening of Remembrance held in honor of Montgomery s homicide victims

Face after face and name after name, the slideshow of Montgomery s homicide victims seemed it would never end.  In fact, it was hundreds short, coming nowhere near representing all the city s victims of fatal violence. In the 24 years Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey has been a prosecutor, there have been 799 homicides, he said.  In an Evening of Remembrance to all of Montgomery s homicide victims, about 200 people gathered at Landmark Church on Tuesday evening to honor those lost to violence. The event, first held in 2019, was canceled last year because of COVID-19 restrictions.  This plague on our city, a plague of violence, needs to be treated as a health emergency, Bailey said.  If we have COVID, doctors are able to diagnose and treat it, and look for a solution. We don t really treat homicides that way, and I think it is a public health emergency. We need to identify the symptoms that cause these homicides, diagnose them and find a solution to treat
