Massachusetts Looks to Ban Gasoline-Powered Vehicle Sales by 2035

Massachusetts Looks to Ban Gasoline-Powered Vehicle Sales by 2035 Massachusetts is ready to follow in California’s footsteps as it moves toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and looks to ban gasoline-fueled vehicles in a bill that was passed earlier this month. Under a program that has been in the works for months, the overall goal is to reduce carbon emissions by 2030 to 45% below 1990 levels. As Massachusetts slowly increases renewable energy alternatives, last year it was already 22% below its 1990 levels. The plan outlines ways to achieve further emissions reductions by 2030 and beyond, according to Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Kathleen Theoharides. The major goal is to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles and require the sale of zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) by 2035. By 2030, Massachusetts wants to have 30% of bus and truck sales be ZEVs, and reach 100% compliance by 2050.

Town Delegation Plays Part In Making Climate-Change Bill Law

Written by Liz Berman Subscribe The Arlington legislative delegation joined its colleagues in passing legislation that overhauls the state s climate laws, aims to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, hopes to create clean-energy jobs and strives to promote environmental justice in communities. Voting to back the measure were Sen. Cindy F. Friedman (D-Arlington), Reps. Dave Rogers (D-Cambridge) and Sean Garballey (D-Arlington). Subscribe I am pleased that the Massachusetts Legislature took this major step forward and solidified its commitment to protecting our environment, Friedman said in a Jan. 11 news release. I am particularly proud that this legislation includes language I fought for during the Senate amendment process that would achieve emissions reductions equitably and in a manner that protects low- and moderate-income persons and environmental-justice populations when the state is developing regulations to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions in our communities.

It Redefines The Realm Of What Might Be Possible : Sign The Climate Bill, Gov Baker

Youth Climate Strike protesters gather on the steps of the Massachusetts State House. (Robin Lubbock/WBUR) The climate bill currently sitting on Gov. Charlie Baker’s desk is bold and ambitious. It holds great promise for Massachusetts, as we transition to a clean energy economy that will bring cleaner air and job growth. But it also has real consequences for the entire nation. As former heads of New York State Energy Research and Development Authority  (NYSERDA) and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), we know firsthand that state policymakers across the country are networked together, and are keenly aware of others’ steps forward or backward on energy and environmental policy. When one state passes and proves a new policy solution, it redefines the realm of what might be possible in the other 49.
