The individual is a female Boston resident in her 20’s who had traveled to the United Kingdom and became ill the day after she returned. She had tested negative for COVID-19 prior to leaving the U.K.

A new highly contagious coronavirus strain that emerged in the United Kingdom and has spread throughout the world was detected in Massachusetts for the first time over the weekend.

MASS. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced that the first case of the COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7 had been detected in the state on Sunday.
In a release, officials said the variant was the same one initially discovered in the United Kingdom. They said the individual developed symptoms in early January and tested positive for COVID-19.
